They are talking as if a fire-resistant house has to be ugly and out of keeping with the environment. Wood is good and plentiful, at least it used to be before they started numbering the days of the spotted owl. But now they are looking at bricks (not in earthquake country!) or poured contcrete with slate or tile or composition roof. Some friends of ours up north have a rammed earth house with a sod roof that wouldn't burn, ever, no how. And it fits into the hills like it grew there. Now we have to look out for the rain. They say a storm is coming in on the weekend. If it's a light one, they can get the clover and grass etc. growing on the hilsides for erosion control. A heavy rain right now would be disaster #3. -- Tracy
