A lot of the times (MDL 100 especially) the PCB connectors were female      1)
just because that's the convention   2) keep the bubble gum out of the
connector on the machine or the wall    3) male pins break and it's _FAR_
easier to repair or replace a cable that it is to repair the PCB.
   
And that's the way it was/is/will be for all _GOOD_ designs.
   
oops (4) connectors might have power on them that might be unsafe to human or
signals.  Jumper cables are meant to be plugged into something; PCB connectors
might not get connected for times or at all (back to 2 again)
