At  work I have had good success in using the URII T-Word program with both the
IBM Proprinter (not portable but many other printers use its emulation) and
also with the Canon Bubble Jet BJ10ex (I think I use Epson LQ emulation). You
can customize printer codes in the URII's CONFIG.DO file and can even have more
than one printer that you use (just include ^P2 or ^P3 as the first line in
your document to tell it which printer driver you are using). The Canon Bubble
Jet is far and away the best portable printer for type quality (Tandy and IBM
both sell the BJ under their own brand names). BJ5's and BJ10's can be had mail
order with street prices in the $200-270 range.
