Subj: REPLY TO MSG #3824 (MODEMS)
My boss bought a WorldPort 9600 fax/data modem not too long ago. I cannot remember what he paid for it, but $130 doesn't sound bad. The Hayes 2400 pocket modem goes for around $100 (at last check). Using an external with the M100 is easy. First, (obvious) connect up the serial cable and apply power to both the M100 and the modem. Second, change the STAT [F3] parameters to match the desired baud rate. The big difference will be that the first character of the stat string will be a number, not the usual "M". For example, 2400/N/8/1 will be 68N1E,xx (xx is the desired pulse dial rate -- not useful for external modems). You are now ready to use the modem. Watch the front panel lights, if available, and tap a few keys. If TX flashes with each key, you're getting through the cable. Ok, you need to understand that a Hayes-compatible modem is "smart." By sending special command strings, the modem will do neat things. All commands begin with the characters "AT". AT stands for ATtention. The modem is smart enough to set its own baud rate to match yours (up to its upper limit) by watching for the letter "A" in AT. Look at your modem manual (you did read it, didn't you?) and find the reset command. On some modems its ATZ and others use AT&F. Enter Term [F4]. Oh yes, I said earlier to type a few characters -- silly me, I didn't tell you to enter Term first. Type the reset command AT whatever, and hit enter. The modem, if all is well, should answer you with either OK or 0. Voila! you're ready to use the ATDT command to dial a number and Telcom at lightspeed (compared to old faithful 300 bps). Most incompatibilities in new modem use are incorrect cables. Good luck!
