Subj: CATALOG TO HONG KONG?
Hello, Rick! I haven't yet fully utilized my "Club100" membership, as far as downloading "100" files, reading the on-line message base, etc. But nevertheless, I am continually impressed and pleased by the continued interest and activity displayed here by all involved, in either a big way or a small way, with the capabilities and use the trusty ole 3-lb. "100"... I may have mentioned (I'm pretty sure I did) that during the last few years of my 27-year residence on the isle of Manhattan (New York County) [I MUST say though, that I'm a "native" of BROOKLYN ny, born & raised]... I belonged to a computer club (one of three I attended meetings of, at or about that time) called NYLUG {the NY Lap User's Group}. Carl Oppedahl was one of our members, author, you'll recall, of "Inside the Model 100." The reason I mention this now (about ten years later; I belonged to NYLUG approx. 1984-1986) IS: a fellow who joined NYLUG about mid-'85 or so was/is a retired Associated Press(AP) reporter for the Far East, c.1949-1984. He had been hired by the HongKong government (where he lived for almost all of those years) to come to New York City, where he had been provided a fairly-plush fourteenth floor apartment in the brand-new 38-story River Towers building, overlooking the East River (actually an estuary) and points east and north (Long Island, Westchester & S. Connecticut, incl. LI Sound). His purpose there was to "use" his press contacts (newspapers, magazines, radio & TV) to place stories that would "play down" the impending (then almost 12 years away) Communist Chinese take-over of HongKong on July 1, 1997... because even at that "remote" date, American businessmen in HongKong were getting "edgy," and preparing to "pull up stakes." This fella's name was/is David J. Roads. He used a Model 100 to transmit copies of his press releases from the East Side of Manhattan to the offices of the HongKong Royal Commissioner's Office, with the built-in 300-baud modem. He asked my help, because somehow or other, he got the overblown notion that I klnew something about the machine and how to use it. Soooo... Q. what does all this have to do with you, and/or "Club100"? A. Dave Roads has written me, date 2.12.95 (Dec.2, '95) saying in part: "About my 200 - I am looking for a book called the Tandy 200 Technical Manual (Cat No. 26-3861) which may still be in some Tandy stores or at the headquarters. Someone said they have an 800 number for such enquiries, but cannot call that from here [HongKong]. Also there were some extra ram 24K chips which would boot the "200" up to 72K, if one added 3 of them, as it has the slots for them. If by chance, you ever hear of anything like this, kindly let me know." I was wondering if you could send a "Club100" catalog to: David J. Roads GPOBox 770 Hong Kong I'm sure he would appreciate it, and quite likely want to purchase several items for his "200," which he still uses extensively. He says (hope I'm running on TOO long here): "I still putt-putt along with old trusty. Fact is, it has been in rice paddies, dropped from helicopters as I alighted, and as a handy table-top for a sandwich and a cold drink (upside down, of course). ...I...have been writing infrastructure reports on Asian countries for multi-national companies. Just finished one on power in China, airports in China, and one on gas and oil..." etc. - So - that's the "scoop" - hope you can accomodate Dave with a catalog. Continued good luck, and will have to check-out the PCLD soon - Walt Larsen Libby MT
