Subj: FASTER MODEMS

Well, that was easy! I just installed two older, 9600 baud modems on the
second hunting group. The number is 510-939-1366. I reconfigured the modem
definition to initialize these modems correctly, set the system back up and
they seem to be working just fine.

In May, when I had The Dock BBS in this lab, I split the 4-line hunting group
into 2, 2-line groups. According to Pac Bell, I was quoted $20 to make the
split. I got the bill ... $80!!! Seems the quote was, although not stated,
$20 per line, not $20 total. I brought this to their attention and they
credited me $60. All is well, once again. But, if I ask to have all the lines
brought together as one 4-line group, again, I am aware that the cost will be
$80, not $20. I really don't have or want to spend $80 right now.

Concept: "When all you have are lemons, make lemon aid." So, now that we have
two, separate hunting groups, let's dedicate them as slow and fast. The slow
group will continue to serve 300 to 2400 baud callers, allowing all Model "T"s
to be able to log on, i.e. OWLs and Model 200 users had problems in the past
until we placed the Hayes Ultra's online ... the Hayes "must" stay. The fast
group will serve the speed demons demands. And no, we can not go faster cause
the 4-port digiboard is not equiped with 16550 UARTs. No 14.4 or 28.8 now or
in the forseeable future. And no Internet access is planned, either.

FYI: Here's what we have online for modems...

Hunting group 1 (slow)
 Line 1: 510-939-1246 Hayes Ultra 2400
Line 2: 510-939-1365 Hayes Ultra 2400 (hunts from above)

Hunting group 2 (fast)
 Line 3: 510-939-1366 US Robotics 9600
Line 4: 510-939-1367 US Robotics 9600 (hunts from above)

For those of you who want faster speed, use the 1366 number. When one person
is on 1366, the next person will automatically be rolled over to 1367. If the
speed deamons will stay off of the 2400 baud lines during OWL fly-ins, then
there will always be a line available for the birds to land and dump their
nightly load (see (L)og for OWL times). Furthermore, hunting group 1 does not
hunt to group 2 and vice versa.

That's it! That's the name of that tune. Let me know how it's working,
please. -Rick-
