Subj: SURVEY - ROM FOR FILE RECOVERY

An Option ROM which you install after a cold-start and use to recover your
files is technically possible. Some folks get cold-starts often, others
rarely. The question to everyone is this: How much should such an Option ROM
cost? The more people that answer this question, the more obvious it is as to
whether or not the ROM should be made. Technical discussions that have led to
this question are in the "UNDELETE -- COLD START RECOVERY" message thread
starting at MSG# 5174.

Something happens and you get a cold-start, so all your files are gone and the
date shows Jan 1. Don't you hate it when that happens? The scenerio for using
the ROM goes like this:

1. You insert the ROM in the Option ROM socket.

2. You go into BASIC and type CALL 911. Like the emergency phone number
9-1-1, you're not likely to forget this. File recovery ensues: you view .BA
files then .DO files, and confirm or reject their recovery, for .CO files the
TOP, END, and EXE addresses are shown for you to confirm or reject their
recovery. When done, the main Menu appears with the file names which you
assigned to each file that you confirmed for recovery. You have recovered from
the cold-start!

3. You remove the ROM, or you can let it remain.
