Dear Rick,
  That's right, the CLEAR0,MAXRAM command could have a chilling result if their
system is set up to call some machine language routines automatically.  That
might happen if they installed a DOS in that area, but all the modern DOSs
protect themselves against that kind of error.  Most CO programs just get
loaded into himem, then do something, and then they are dead.  But the space
they occupied is still reserved.  The ususal caveats are in order!
  Some BASIC programs reserve gobs of string space.  CLEAR by itself doesn't
flush that.  CLEAR 0 or CLEAR 256 will pare any excess down to size.  
  Then combine it with CLEAR 0,MAXRAM:NEW to flush out as much as possible.
