Subj: REPLY TO MSG #6498 (LAPTOP IDENTITY PROGRAM)

It's been a long time since I looked at identity of IBM PC via a BASIC
interpretor.  I mean years.  During those years it has worked for several PCs
which at extremes are an old XT and a 486/66.  Yes, we're PEEKing RAM of the
PC, but as I recall a particular 64K segment is assured (and the content of
31009) due to the fact that BASIC or BASICA or QBASIC interpreter is in
control.  So this doesn't apply to compiled BASIC or other .EXE arrangements.
That's all I can remember about the PC aspect Gary.  Hope my memory is
accurate.  At any rate, use a PC BASIC interpreter and confirm that PEEK(31009)
yeilds 49 which is the ASCII code for the numeral character "1".
