Roger: I understand your frustration.  It sounds like you are using a CCR-81
(Computer Cassette Recorder 81).  The 81 is not a good tape storage device.  I
suggest a CCR-82, or 83, set on the P setting on the volumn control--P stands
for "program."
 
Another item you might want to check is the tape you are using.  Use the worst
tape you can find, not the best.  I've over stated this but the point is that
the high-end tape filters out the edges of the waveform, i.e. dolby, bis, etc.
 
Regular old tape, on a CCR-82 is actually a dependable, albeit slow, storage
media.
