Subj: NEW 300 BAUD NOISE

As much as I like the 2400 baud modems for signing onto Club100 bbs from my
desktop, they suck at 300 baud when signing on using an autologin from model Ts
at 300 baud. When I first sign on at 300 baud, there is a bunch of noise,
maybe 50 characters, before the connection is established and the good ol'
Club100 message comes through with no further noise. I interpret this as some
kind of attempt by the new 2400 baud modems to adjust their baud rate down to
the painstakingly slow 300 baud. The trouble is that the noise as often as not
contains the "?" character, which is what all my autologin sequences use to key
in on the "First Name?" prompt. So the automated stations end up responding to
the prompt before TBBS is ready and then they get stuck until the watchdog
timer kicks in. Is there anything I can do about that, say by using a differnt
prompt key, or is there any adjustment on the modem that can regulate the baud
adjustment process?
