Subj: REPLY TO MSG #5788 (TS-DOS)
I was running back through some messages and noted that I had not gotten back to you on your questions. I'm taking a few moments to hit the hight spots. > In November, 1993, I sent you the following two messages and never > got any answers from you so I will resubmit them. I have changed > them slightly because I have had time to experiment with the ROM. In 1993!!! For heavens sake. I'm not superman, Don. In the future, ask one question at a time and do it a little sooner then 3 years later. Okay? Please?! :) > 1) "File tagging" isn't mentioned in the book but I found that "T" > works. T for tag, T again for untag, G for global tag, U for global untag. > 2) On the disk menu, F6 is labeled "LOG". I guess it reloads the > menu from the disk so you can swap disks and see the new menu. It > isn't in the book eather. In the book on page 2-9, F6 is a PAGE key > to see the second set of file names if there are more than 20 files > on the disk. I found that <SHIFT><DOWN-ARROW> performs this > function. Yes on both counts. > 4) There is no "Sall" or "Lall" function (P2-6,2-9). F7 on the ram > menu is blank and F7 on the disk menu is labeled "BANK" to switch > disk banks. Correct. > 5) On page 2-11, > It says to use: what works: > <CTRL>P to Print a file P > <CTRL>L to List a file L > <CTRL>D to print Directory D > > <CTRL>P, <CTRL>L and <CTRL>D don't do anything. Well ... then that's how it works. It is not uncommon for the documentation to not be in sink with the product. I didn't build the product or write the docs. What you have is how I got it. > 6) The update policy says to fill out a registration card but there > isn't one in the book. How do I get one? Would it do any good now? Update? There ain't going to be no updates. You're lucky to have what you have. Traveling Software discontinued their Model T product line in the late 80's. If I hadn't bugged them for 8 months throughout 1989 to revise and carry on the line you wouldn't have what you have. > 7) Your 1992 catalog on page 6 says "ROM version includes RAM file > compression." Is it in there? How do I use it? Again, no mention > in the book. R to compress and R to uncompress ... I think! The manual should have mentioned this feature. Perhaps you received an early manual. I wish you had said something a lot sooner. I would have had a new manual in your hands a long time ago. > 8) Someone wrote inside the cover, "Note: Use save all functions to > save "CA" file created by TS-DOS." Was this written to me or did > the book belong to someone else? I haven't seen a "CA" file created > by TS-DOS. What is it? What is it for? Hmmmm... sounds like you accidently received an early manual. Even though it's been years since you purchased TS-DOS ROM I will send you a new manual. The CA extension refers to Lucid files created by either the Lucid ROM or Super ROM. The .CA extension is a non-standard extension and is infact a machine language file format. > (message 2. You did answer this a little but it is still a pain > to get around. It would be nice to be able to use TS-DOS on all > files on the disk!) If you're putting 40 files on your disks, attempting to max them out, you may be defeating their purpose. As for TS-DOS not seeing all the files ... that's news to me. Frankly, I have not had a problem with file access with TS-DOS but then I don't fill up my disks, either. > Please check into this and let me know if this bug has been noticed > before and fixed. I might have been noticed before ... I can't recall. Fixed? Not sure. When you run TS-DOS ROM what version does it indicate? > (end of messages. I called Traveling Software about these problems > but they wouldn't even allow me to ask any questions, much less try > to answer them. They were rather rude. Ahhmmmm... again, you're expecting too much. They are not "in love" with their product line. It's not a hobby for them. And, you probably came across as a wierd techie destined to waste their time (HAM folks are notorious for these traits ... they're in their own world and think they're right all the time!). After all, Traveling Software's Model T line was long since dead before most of their current folks even started working for the company. I bet you didn't even consider their side of the story before you called. Huh? Did you ... did you? Huh? :) > By the way, is there any way to access bank #2 from BASIC?) 0: = bank 1 1: = bank 2 OPEN"1:filename.DO"FOR... > (Unrelated question) > Is there a good word processor for the 102? If it is in ROM, how do > I use it and TS-DOS without having to open the bottom of the > computer to swap roms? (Bad for both the rom and the computer.) There are several good word processing programs (actually print formatters). As for multiple ROMs, nothing beats a Booster Pak!! > How much is library access these days? Still just $12 for unlimited access for 12 months. Thanks for asking ... and next time don't let so darn much time pass. Okay?
