Well, for what it's worth, I left it plugged in, and later measured the voltage
on the nicad without batteries in the unit.  I got 4.7 volts. I also noticed
that the only abnormality on the screen is the clock. the last minute digit
changes along with the last second digit, displaying various symbols.  All
other programs and routines run OK. Boy, I whish I had a technical manual for
this one, I did have one for my 100, but it is of course totally different.
Maybee I can get a junker for parts, or "reasonable" service for this one. 
Strange, indeed.
