  That 52 VDC sounds wrong.  When I worked for TRW and Vitel making the phone
use recorders for NYnex we used a 48VDC standard, which we knocked down to 5VDC
on each and every PCB.  
  After all, this is all based on Carbon-Zinc dry cell technology of 32 cells
making 48 volts.   To get 52 volts you would need 34.6666 cells of CZn  or 24.7
cells of lead acid battery.  Or maybe they were just chopping the line voltage
in half---- 52 x 2 = 104 ---- no, that's still too far away for even the 108 of
1 phase of 3-phase.
