As additional info, nicads have a very steep voltage drop off when they reach
the end of their charge.  Even if you find where to tweak the input to a
voltage comparator used in the low battery detection circuit, I would not
advise setting it to a very low voltage.  A friend of mine discovered that if
he tried to boot his M100 under such low voltage conditions, he scrambled his
memory. In my company's single board computer products, we have noticed the
same type of corruption when marginal power levels are fed to system RAM.
Rick's method is OK. The 5th cell makes up for the 0.3 volt per cell difference
between nicads and alkalines.
