Subj: REPLY TO MSG #4333 (TAP-CIS FOR MODEL 200)

Lucia: I've moved your request into the conference for others to respond to as
well. As far as I know--and I do not use Compuserve--the program TAP-CIS is a
MS-DOS based program, i.e., it runs on MS-DOS computers. Some folks refer to
these as IBM-compatables, or clones. The Model 200, as well as Model 100, 102
and the NEC8201, even the WP2--those machines we support--are not MS-DOS
machines and thus can not run MS-DOS programs. They can, of course, share data
with DOS computers but can not run DOS-specific programming. There are
technical reasons for this but I see no need to go into that discussion at this
point.

So, TAP-CIS is a DOS-based program, not available for your Model 200. Now, are
there, is there, could there be a program for the Model 200 (or 100, etc) that
will automate CIS access? I don't know. But, others may. That is why I've
brought your question into the open for other, more knowledgable responses.

Hope this helps... -Rick-

An Idea: Knowing that TAP-CIS is DOS-based, and, knowing that online
communications requires little in the way of computing power on the terminal
end, I offer this idea: Go down to a used computer store and buy an older DOS
computer; like an XT or 80286 with a small hard drive and a mono-chrome
monitor. Attach a new, 14400 fax modem and you're all set to access CIS in the
modern way. Plus, you'll have a fax machine, as well as a computer for file
transfers for your Model 200 via the Lapdos II you purchased 06-Nov-90, and the
cable 25-9 you purchased on 15-Feb-91. You will need to adapt the cable to a
25-pin COM port if you get an XT but that's no biggie. Again, this is just an
idea.
