The nibble idea has merrit.  Think, for a moment... she said she was going
through a university computer (file server).  Now, what sort of equipment do
"universities" use for file servers?  Most likely, the file server is an IBM
mainframe or NEC VAX.  The operating system may be AS400 (that's actually the
name of the product line, not the DOS) or Unix, i.e., she was trying to log
onto the Internet--initially designed for Unix (UUCP sites).

My thinking involved non-TTY emulation, since both the IBM mainframe and the
DEC Vax defaults to non-TTY emulation, so I suggested she check this out.  Your
thinking is also along a solid line since non-micros use BPS, not baud, and
sometimes opt for 2 stop bits on a 6-bit byte.  In either case, this might
explane the 0000 nibble theory.

At this point, we'll just have to wait for Mary Ann to check back in, capture
our responses, check them out, and report back.  I hope she does.  This problem
is interesting.  -Rick-
