Tom ... just read your message to Tom Jones about his 1200 baud modem. I'm
sure Jones will conver your question next time he logs in but for now, allow me
to add my 2 cents.

Internal connection? Not likely unless he's tricked up something special.
Don't count on it in anyway.

External? You bet. Not a problem. Just about any external 1200 baud modem
will work just fine. In fact, many folks use the old Hayes Smartmodem 1200.
You can usually find one or so at swap meets, used computer parts stores, user
group meetings, etc. Just start asking around. The external modems require a
power source; usually an AC/DC adaptor. Make sure you get the one that came
with the modem. Some of the tiny 1200 modems, like the pocket modem, etc. ran
off either a 9v battery or pulled its power from the computer. You can't do
the later but you can isolate the power leads and connect them to a jury-rigged
external battery.

Using the external 1200 baud modem is easy.

- go into telcom
- set your stat to 58n1e <enter>
- go into term mode ... you are now talking to your modem, directly

Test the modem with AT <enter> you should get an OK. You might have to use AT
in all CAPS. Some of the older modems did not accept commands in lower case.

To call, simply key in ATDTphonenumber and hit <enter>. The ATDT stands for
"attention" "tone-dial" the following phonenumber, i.e. ATDT15109391246.

Have fun. -Rick-
