If you had gone to college, you would perhaps be just as unlikely to have
encountered Raymond Smullyan's works as not.  I'm not sure if his works are
used as college texts to any appreciable extent--I certainly did not see his
books in a college context.
 
I am an avid fan of the public library, and found Raymond Smullyan's books in
the recreational mathematics section.  [I do math for fun--
it's one of the reasons I got the Model 100, to do mathematical simulations,
game theory, 3D visualization, and other math stuff.]
 
Perhaps you are more familiar with these names: Martin Gardner Douglas
Hofstadter
 
[Both of these people are reknowned popular mathematicians, AND they both
contributed reviews in the jacket copy on the back cover.]
