Subj: REPLY TO MSG #4754 (LIBRARY UPDATE)

----
Bill: Your question is well worth open discussion. First off, when a program
is updated its date online reflects that update moment. This is, after all,
just a computer. True, we have not updated too many files in the library this
year but then, we've done a pretty good job all along over the years--not to
say that there is more works to do. That's all part of the fun.

Adding files to the library is a management duty for Robert Benson, and
myself--all a matter of time and interest. Members are encouraged to upgrade
library programs and offer them back, of course. We then take member-upgrades
and feed them back into the library. All uploads from members go through the
(7)Uploads area, and are appreciated.

Library access compensation in turn for programming: You've hit a nerve. In
the past, I've been approached many times about this. And, in some cases,
where in I felt the club would gain by this kind of relationship, I've set it
up. But I have to tell you, it's been a real loser. Time and time again,
there was so much more take then give, and the quality of give was so minimal
and poor, that I just do not do that anymore.

So, to answer your question, I must respectfully decline the offer. This BBS
costs hard dollars to keep online, and is accessed for free. Paid access to
the library represents the only revenue support--still just $12 annually. And
frankly sir, we can use the cash. Unlike last year, the BBS has not covered
its overhead this year. The costs are simple, 4 phone lines, electricity, and
a small, monthly reserve for replacement and upgrades; usch as modems, burned
out monitors and harddisks. Management time is not factured into the cost
list.

Thank you for asking, Bill. Let's keep the program offerings both up and down
a hobby, and keep compensation and other value considerations out of the
picture.

At your service... -Rick-
