I like your way of doing things.  I, too, like to see if I can fix things
before taking them to others.
 
Owning and using multiple computers is very much the norm, these days.  I
wouldn't worry about how out dated they are, as long as they work.  The basic
functionality of a computer does not diminish with age.  Do not feel guilty
just because the market moves away from you.  The market must and will move to
something new or die if it sits still.
 
As users, I feel that our task is to put these tools to work, rather then just
play with them.  For myself, it's always a thrill to automate something that
returns value.  And, it's always interesting to note that the simplist
automation (i.e., batch files, set processes, forms, etc.) seem to return the
highest value.  The simplist automation is quite practical with simple
tools--not to say that a computer, any computer, is a simple tool, it's just an
expression of comparision between the old and the new in computing tools.
