Lex: Interesting thread. May I join you?

Your frustrations with CIS are shared by many. It's not CIS's fault, you know.
Frankly, I think they've done an outstanding job. In order to offer such vast
amount of diverse information and handle such a large number of online users,
their system must be complex. For some, however, CIS is an overwhelm; and a
costly one at that if your use-patterns are not ingrained, or the value of use
is not apparent.

Those I've spoken with over the years were either heavy users or casual users.
In either case, unless they gained measurable value from CIS use, complexity
and cost was a constant complaint. Otherwise, their use was almost strictly
dedicated to only a few items. In response, various programs, guides, and
publications have flourished. The idea in all cases was to lesson the burden
of online use, offer explanations and tutorials, and generally make a buck off
of the "need to access."

Use of online services, generally speaking, and this one included, are not
obvious; certinly not second nature. Use demands an active involvement, even
for the seasoned user. My current remote use, once again, brings this
involvement to my attention. I conclude that a BBS is not like a magazine.
One can not thumb through the pages quickly and get the general overview.
Everything is hidden behind commands, lists, and exacting keystrokes and
patterns. It's such a drag.

Before I left on vacation I vowed to finally write a BBS-use guide and tutorial
while away. This vacation is a golden opportunity to reexperience the
frustration. Back in the lab, next to the system terminal, all is quickly,
easily accessed; but not out here.

Any and all feedback as to what you think should be in such a guide and
tutorial, or what the chapters or parts should be, and in what order, etc.,
etc., etc., ... any thoughts... is greatly appreciated.

Of course, I have urgent need to finish this "thing." I placed upon myself the
presure to make sure I'd actually start and finish this project. Before
leaving I placed an ad in the next Portable 100 Magazine issue advertising its
availablity! How's that for an alligator? Anyway, all who assist will become
beta copy editors, receive a free final copy, and revisions. So, help!!!
