  Just thot I'd add a wonderful note to this "special character" discussion.  
  
Remember in DOS it's a back slash  \ to separate path roots, branches, twigs,
leaves and files.
  
Us UNIX people from Mount XINU use a forward slash / for the same thing. 
 
Try bouncing from system to system six or eight times a day and see what it
does to your nerves.  (In UNIX a back slash dis-ables the special-ness of a
special character like $ in a path name.)
