Subj: LCD SOLUTIONS

I received yet, another question about losing pixels on an LCD. My response to
this is:

Here are your solutions:

1) Ignore it and just keep on using your Model 102 without fixing anything, but
it won't go away and might get worse.

2) Get the word out that you are looking for other Model 102s for parts.
Newspapers and police stations have them sitting on shelves or in drawers. The
technical supervisor usually has access to the parts and might just give you a
screen. Also, keep your eyes open for swap meets and garage sales. These
things are everywhere.

3) Call EME Systems in Berkeley, CA. Talk with Tracy Allen, the owner. He
might be able to fix your screen or might have a spare he can sell you.

4) I do not have spares. Sorry.

How to swap out the LCD in a Model 102.

Split the case, unplug the old LCD, plug in the new LCD and button'er up.

There's a trick to splitting the case.

1) Turn off the memory power on the bottom of the Model 102. While it's
upsidedown, remove the four screws near the feet on the bottom, then turn the
Model 102 rightsideup.

2) With the Model 102 sitting in front of you, like you were going to use it,
rock it up onto its right hand edge. This will orient it so that the keyboard
is facing your right and the black bottom half is facing your left. The left
edge of the Model 102 is sticking straight up.

3) Push down on the center of the top edge that's sticking straight up...
pushing down on the black bottom half, only. At the same time, push in on the
black bottom on the front edge facing directly at you. I usually do this with
my left hand, while pulling on the white top with my right hand. The case will
"pop" apart and lay open in front of you like a clam. The bottom will be
rightsideup and the top will be upsidedown ... completely separated from the
bottom.

4) Remove the connection cable from the old LCD and place the LCD aside.

5) Insert the connection cable into the new LCD and place it in the computer.
Keep your finger prints and lint off the LCD!!!

6) Place the white top back onto the black bottom and work it into place. You
might have to play with the back edge and around the function keys a bit but
that's par for the course.

7) Reinsert the four screws and turn on the memory power.

...you're done!
