Subj: REPLY TO MSG #2219 (DISK-INTENSIVE PROGRAMS)

Hi, Rick,

Well, that's pretty much what I figured. The philosophy of RAM/ROM based
programming is fine. Until very recently it's been the only way to get true
portability, since no moving parts are needed.

I wonder whether a hybrid Model T - based around something akin to eme's extRAM
- with the addition of MS-DOS compatibility, is feasible, marketing-wise. I
mean, why not just dump the concept of portables with built-in drives and
substitute powerful extRAM-like chips? Swap programs in and out of ROM/RAM, as
needed, from your desktop drives at home/office. There's no reason, from an
engineering standpoint, why all laptops can't be as thin and light as a WP-2,
provided you're willing to sacrifice the LaserGasPlasmoTronicVGA
battery-sucking display!

Just a thought...
