John, the old ^@ is ascII 0, meaning null, meaning your memeory got filled with
a lot of styrofoam peanut packing chips...well the silicon equivalent thereof.
  
Sounds like it's time to back up any files you have and do a full arctic start
of your machine.... Those nulls can get in there when hitting the wrong keys
during a Select-Cut/Paste sequence. Consider your RAM is corrupted and needs to
be flushed.  Also check any programs you're using that might be adding the
trash padding.
