I often operate my T102 from a 6-volt, 3 amp-hour gel cell battery. The gel
cell sports a plug that goes into the side of the T102, and also a socket where
I plug in the power adapter to recharge the battery and operate the T102. The
T102 does not go off when I plug in the AC adapter with that arrangement.

You can defeat the internal make-before-break effect by connecting a diode
(shottky 1N5139 preferably) between the two inner contacts on the power adapter
socket inside the '102. The anode of the diode goes to the battery side, and
the cathode goes to the '102 power side. That way the battery can supply
current to the T102, but the diode prevents the power adapter from charging the
batteries, which would be bad with alkalines. Some people have used NICADs and
put a resistor across the diode to charge the NICADs from the AC adpater.
