A guy who was having trouble with his computer, with an XR4 installed, had
tried to "cold start" it by turning off the memory power. Well, I asked him
how long he had left the memory power off. He said that it had been just a
couple of minutes, and the screen had come up completely blank, no directory,
no files no nothing. I had him cold start the machine using the standard,
sure-fire method, with CTRL-BREAK-RESET. The screen came back instantly. The
interesting thing was, holding breath, he did the CALL63012'!, and the XR4 bank
was still there. I relearned two things from his experience: 1) The XR4 memory
holds its contents to a much lower voltage than does the older memory
technology and 2) The memory-power switch for two minutes OFF is not a reliable
way to produce a cold start.
