Subj: REPLY TO MSG #4735 (PROGRAM?)
My apologies- seems I'm becoming rather cryptic, doesn't it? Permit me to clarify... In working data base with my Tandy I've used several different methods/programs including SAMPLE.BA, CRDFIL ROM, and MULTIPLAN ROM (very limited use). CRDFIL is my favorite. Oftentimes I employ this ROM's totaling-function to find the total number of cards (files) in a data base. This can be accomplished by creating a separate field which always has a given value of 1, then instructing CRDFIL to total this field. Thus, I can easily total up this particular field and find, for instance, that there are 100 cards in a certain data base. That's nice. CRDFIL lacks an AUTOMATED means by which each card can be assigned a SEQUENTIAL NUMBER, however. So, I wondered about using a secondary program to treat my raw CRDFIL data base. Perhaps a BASIC program exists which might be able to both count by increments of "one", and also search the raw CRDFIL data base (.DO file ). Using each subsequent integer sum, this BASIC program could be employed to replace a recurring, but unusual solitary character particular to a certain field in each card. In essence, a count of each card would be performed and a different numerical value would be assigned thereto. The reuslting treated .DO file could then be accessed and manipulated through CRDFIL ROM in the customary ways. However, the improved data base will now respond with more power! Particularly when it comes to printing labels or index cards. For example, each printed card would have a unique numerical ID# allowing them to be ordered sequentially (in the manner of a card catalog). Subsequent labels (which correspond to the card catalog) could similarly be constructed and applied to the individual photographs in my personal collection. Numbering files/cards by manual means is cumbersome and prone to human error. What my data base needs is an easy to use, automated numbering program. Can you point me in the right direction? =Keith Ristuben
