Yes, in pre-IBMPC days the parallel port was obviously not the serial port.  In
fact, the parallel port was, many times, a card-edge connector.  Post-IBMPC
brings us D25 female printer ports and D25 and/or D9 male serial ports.
Exceptions to this "rule" happened on various not-quite-IBM-PC-clones during
the years from 1982 - 1985/86.  You'll recall those were the days when complete
submission to the "IBM standard" was tough to swallow for the industry.  Those
were the days when folks used to say, "Long live CP/M."
