Subj: I BOUGHT MY TOY.
I got it!!! From an original asking price of $875, I was able to get the Toshiba T-1200, 20 meg. hard disk, 720K floppy, 1 meg. RAM for.......$300. I guess it's just my charm. After I cleaned it up and got all the dirt off it, it looks great and runs well. It should serve me well with the word processing and DOS environment I need. BUT!!!!! Turns out the DOS she gave me (without manuals) is actually Compact DOS for Compact laptops. When I tried playing with the DOS a bit, it told me to "Insert Compact Sys Disk" or some odd statement. I called Toshiba and they told me that I needed Toshiba DOS which is MS-DOS licensed from Microsoft and which they added, changed, and adapted to address specific Toshiba computer specs. to allow adjustment of battery saving, screen blanking, com port specs, etc. They really want me to buy it and want to charge me $77 for DOS 3.3 or $99 for DOS 4.01 I know I can get the upgrade for MS DOS 5.0 and DR DOS for a lot less, but then, this XT does not have the capacity to do all the 286, 386 or 486 things that MS-DOS 5 or DR-DOS 6 were written for. Is there a way of using plain white bread MS-DOS to do the things of Toshiba DOS (like accessing the hi memory, since the T-1200 has a meg of RAM), or do I need to shell out the $77 or $99????? Any comments from Anyone???? Thanks, +Rick+
