Subj: PROGRESS GETTING OP SYS SOURCE CODE
Today Microsoft returned my telephone call of last Friday. After I clarified our desire for disclosure of source code documentation and my intent to request it in writing, they suggested I write to their "Legal Permission Department" and supplied the FAX number (206) 869-1327. I sent a FAX today that covers the six laptops. The attached file is that FAX except I've obscured my personal address info. Let's hope the Legal Permission Department is very close to or exactly where the copyright issue must be settled. Assuming the FAX makes it clear that Microsoft can't make any more money on the op systems, the legal beagles may give us a green light. Then we'll face two problems: find the dusty drawer that holds what we want, and solve software license issues. As to license issues I'm still looking for, and sometimes finding, more targeted addresses for the laptop manufacturers. If all goes well, I expect Microsoft as the licenser to agree to disclose on condition of permission by the individual licensees. Then we plead our case to each manufacturer for all of their respective laptops. Keep your fingers crossed. *Enclosed File: PLEAFAXM.TXT
